Our key strengths in hydrocarbon solvents Mineral spirits are used as a key ingredient in paint and varnish products used to coat metal surfaces to prevent corrosion. For specific applications, D-grades with an extremely narrow boiling range can be made available.Īpplication areas for aliphatic mineral spirits are in low odour paints, wood treatment products, printing inks, adhesives, metal cleaning and degreasing, dry cleaning, aerosol formulations, household speciality products, lamp oil, lighter fluids, hand cleaning compounds, metal rolling oils and drilling solvents. What Does Mineral Spirits Mean Mineral spirits are a type of chemical substance that is a liquid hydrocarbon solvent mixture of aliphatic and alicyclic petroleum-based compounds. The number after the D-grade indicates the minimum flash point in degrees centigrade (eg ShellSol D40). Mineral spirits is a term that specifies the products composition, while paint thinner is a generalized term that describes the products function, not its composition. Our aliphatic mineral spirits comprise the ShellSol D (de-aromatised) grades, the hydrotreated VM&P (Varnish Makers' and Painters') naphtha and hydrotreated mineral spirits. Their low aromatics content is obtained by deep hydrogenation. Just like the faster evaporating special boiling point hydrocarbons, aliphatic mineral spirits are fractionated from selected feedstock.
